Holy Grail Skincare Routine for Oily Acne Prone Skin

If you happen to be oily, it’s likely you have acne prone skin. Your skin looks dehydrated and deprived, but it gets oily quickly after you wash your face. Your makeup doesn’t last very long. You don’t want to put on any moisturizers because you’re afraid it’s going to cause your skin to react badly and break out.

The  truth is, maybe the problem isn’t putting on moisturizers, the problems can be the lack of it.

I’m not going to lie to you and say that these skincare steps are going to solve your acne problem if you have severe acne. That’s just mean! If that’s the case, you need to see a dermatologist as the problems require medication and proper treatments.

This skincare routine I’m about to tell you, however, will help clear out your skin and strengthen it to prevent future skin problems. For those with mild to moderate acne, you will see noticeable improvement if you apply this consecutively for at least 30 days.

So let’s get started!

Acne Prone Skincare Routine

Step 1: Cleansing

It is very important to acquire the habit of cleaning our face in the morning to remove the excess sebum that occurs during sleep and at night, to remove makeup or the remains of impurities that in many cases favor the appearance of acne.

For that I use mild cleansing gel.

After damping the face, apply the gel in circles gently (no hard rubbing please!), then rinse with water and dry with a towel.

It is very important that we use a small towel exclusively for the face.

Step 2: Toning

I apply a little tonic water on a cotton pad and I gently dab it on the face without dragging, focusing on the t-zone, which is where I accumulate more oil.

The tonic helps soothe the skin and close the pores while prepping it for the following products.

I use the soothing facial tonic since I have sensitive skin and this gets my skin cool and calm at the same time.

Step 3: Hydration

A basic step in all facial routine. I try to apply moisturizers on my skin right after toning to lock in the moisture. You don’t want to give your skin a chance to dehydrate by letting the  air draw out moisture from it. And to do that, you just apply occusive moisturizers on before letting your skin completely dry.

I use oily skin cream gel, which is 100% oil-free, gel-like; it absorbs well, and has an incredible smell and hydrates my skin without adding greasiness to it.

You can look for products that has burdock extract, with anti seborrheic properties; this helps control excess oil and keeps the skin hydrated but without shine or oily appearance.

Many times we think that by hydrating we will give more oil to the skin, but it is not, as a skin without moisture becomes dehydrated and more excess sebum is produced to compensate the lack of moisture.

Step 4: Eye cream

I deposit a small amount on the ring finger and apply around the eye with light touches.

Personally it is a step that I skip in the morning when applying concealer / makeup. Some people with dry skin around the eyes might skin prefer applying it before makeup as it helps plump up the texture and make it easier for even application of makeup.

I am using the eye cream from …..because thanks to its hyaluronic acid content it improves the elasticity of the skin.

My Simple Nighttime Skincare Routine for Oily / Acne Prone Skin

Always, always remove makeup and cleanse your face no matter how tired you are! Without this step, why are you even reading this?

I use oil cleanser or sometimes cleansing balm, then a biphasic eye make-up remover for the eyes and a non-greasy micellar water for the face.

Step 1: Make up on eyes

For this I use a two-phase waterproof make-up remover.

Apply a little on a small cotton pads and press each eye, let them soak up the makeup then gentle wipe away the impurities. This way there is no harsh tucking and rubbing your eyes that will irritate and cause you premature wrinkles.

Step 2: Face remover

I always use micellar water

I’m using Banila Co zero it cleansing balm. It’s the most satisfying feeling to rub the balm on your face and watch it melt of the makeup. Then add a little water onto hands and reapply on face. This will turn milky. Rinse of well before washing your face again with a cleansing gel.

If you prefer using just micellar water, make sure to not drag the cotton pads across the face too hard. Be gentle. Treat her nice and well if you don’t want any premature wrinkles and saggy skin.

Step 3: Add toning water to calm your skin and prep it for some treatments.

Step 4: Put on serum / medication to treat your problem areas.

For acne / oily skin, I recommend using niacinamide serum + hyaluronic acid serum to rehydrate skin and prevent it from producing excess sebum.

Step 5: Lock in the hydration by using occlusive moisturizers. Sleeping mask is a good choice.

I love one from Laneige; they just release a new formula specifically for irritate acne prone skin with Cica extract to calm and soothe the redness and irritation. Not a big fan of it’s scent to be honest, but it works wonders at helping calming the redness.

Weekly Facial Routine for Oily / Acne Prone Skin

Exfoliate

Chemical Exfoliating Products for Acne Skin

Twice a week exfoliate my skin with a chemical skin exfoliator (AHA/BHA products) to get rid of dead skin cells (which tend to combine with excess sebum and clog pores, hence bumpy textures of skin).

I’m not a big fan of physical scrubs as I find it to be too harsh. If your skin is sensitive the last thing you want to do it rub it against something, as that will just scrape off skin barrier and weakens your skin.

Masks:

Bentonite clay maks with AHA or BHA is a great product to help draw out impurities and retexturize your skin surface mildly. That’s how you get the rejuvenated and glowly skin.

I apply it in front, nose and chin and let it act for 15 to 20 minutes.

Then I carefully remove and remove the remains with water.

The skin feels and looks amazing after that.

Hope this skincare routine for the oily/acne prone skin is doable and helpful to you . Let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
